Recovery Can Create Better Companion Stories Than Permadeath
Permanent loss creates stakes quickly. It also deletes the creature, history, and future decisions the player cared about.
Recovery can preserve consequence. An injured companion may need rest, temporarily lose an ability, become cautious in a familiar situation, or require a different expedition route. The party must adapt, but the relationship continues.
Signal the risk before commitment, show the recovery path, and avoid turning care into an opaque timer. Give the player meaningful choices between quick incomplete treatment, longer safe rest, and a quest that resolves a specific limitation.
Injury should not become punishment theater. The goal is a new planning problem and a story beat, not guilt for using a favorite creature.
