The short version: Pick the companion whose ordinary turns and exploration behavior match how you want to play.

Fire, water, and nature are memorable labels. They rarely explain how a starter feels across the first several hours.

Compare ordinary actions. Does the companion protect and wait, scout and act early, or restore and extend a route? Check resource cost, recovery, switching value, and how mistakes are corrected.

Temperament can guide the choice without becoming a hidden penalty. A cautious guardian may prefer deliberate play. A curious scout may reward exploration. A supportive cub may reduce recovery pressure while taking longer to finish battles.

A fair selection screen previews role, pace, and one representative ability. It should not require a guide to avoid a permanently inferior choice.
